Poufs

The casual style of poufs -- also called ottomans, hassocks, or footstools -- livens up any decor, and I plan to mix and match several in the small living room space in our new Boston digs. The perfect pouf is firm enough to serve as extra seating, but not so heavy that it can't be moved easily around the room. The pouf in the top left photo is the traditional Moroccan style; my favorites are the Indian-style ones with tassels, though the tassels might prove too tempting for my cats. I found all of the poufs in the photo on Etsy, a wonderful site featuring handmade and vintage items. If you were going to pick two or three, which ones would you choose?

Demolition: Day 1

Demolition turns me on. When it comes to old house renovations, the start of a new project always begins with uncovering the past. Here is my kitchen on the first day of demolition. When I look at it, I see all of the possibility of the new design, the excitement of a new cooking space, the options still open to us. I just love it.

Mismatched lighting

Of the many things I like about this kitchen, I'm most drawn to the two pendant lights that don't match. I'd probably never have thought of that.

A converted short bus

If I had one of these converted Chevrolet Viking short buses, I could pack some clothes and my toothbrush, grab my laptop (and iPad, and phone, and charging cords), and escape this endless winter and the snow piling up outside.
