Borgen

Cross House of Cards with The West Wing, set it in Denmark, and prepare for some serious binge watching. Borgen is, by far, the best political drama series we've watched since, well, House of Cards. Brigitte Nyborg, leader of the Moderate party, becomes Prime Minister by cobbling together a fragile coalition. While facing constant challenges from her political allies and foes, she's also fighting on the home front with her young children and frustrated husband. The stellar ensemble includes party leaders, spin doctors, and the press.  Available on DVD, or borrow from the library; there are three seasons, a total of 30 episodes. Scandal

Sexy soap opera thriller. When the first season aired (on ABC), I didn't like Scandal. When several friends said "try again", I did -- and I got hooked, completely and happily. If you like political intrigue, ensemble casts, love triangles, and thrillers with twists and turns, you'll find it all in Scandal. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix; Season 3 is on television now, on Thursday nights. Starring Kerry Washington. The always-wonderful Khandi Alexander has a recurring role this season. House of Cards

Before Francis Underwood, in the American adaptation of House of Cards, there was Francis Urquhart, Chief Whip of the Conservative Party, played in splendidly dripping evil by Ian Richardson. The three-episode BBC mini series set the bar high, and Kevin Spacey's psychopathic Francis keeps it there. Both series are available on Netflix.
